How can one unlock the secrets of long Black hair? How can one experience ultra black hair growth? The list goes on and on. Growing black hair is not hard. Black hair can and does grow. Yet, certain styling techniques and products are needed to cause more fragile African American hair to grow.

Rule #1: Employ the Right Shampooing and Conditioning Techniques

1) Use the right products. Do not use shampoos with sulfates or silicones. Although some Black women can experience hair growth no matter what product they use, 90% of black women (and men) have drier hair that requires all that natural oils it can get. Shampoos that contain sulfates, any derivative, glycols, and silicones (any ingredient that ends in CONE), take moisture away from black hair. This facilitates hair breakage, brittleness, and dryness. It can also create scalp conditions for some people. In fact, you should avoid mineral oil or petroleum based greases or hair lotions. 3) Do not overprocess the hair with relaxers or texturizers. If your African American hair already has chemicals on it, such as a relaxer, do not apply more chemicals, such as hair dyes and rinses.

If you have Black hair, here are some tips to help your hair look and feel its best.

1. Avoid overwashing your hair. Straight and wavy hair tends to get oily very quickly because of its structure. This is why it has to be washed quite often. Black hair is different. It doesn’t get oily quickly because of its tightly curled structure. This structure keeps sebum, the natural oil that the scalp produces, from flowing along the hair shaft in Black hair. That is why Black hair is dry, and that is why it should not be overwashed. Too much washing will cause it to dry out even further.

2. Use hair care products made specifically for Black hair. Black hair is drier and more delicate than other types of hair, and it needs lots of moisture to stay healthy. Many hair care products are designed to strip moisture out of the hair, and this is the opposite of what Black hair needs.

3. Avoid brushing your hair. Use a wide toothed comb, or your fingers, to work with your hair. Brushes can destroy Black hair by shearing it out of the scalp.

4. Avoid sleeping in hair accessories such as curlers, barrettes, scrunchies, head bands, etc. Wearing these kinds of accessories when sleeping puts unnecessary stress on the hair and can lead to hair damage.

5. Work with your hair to try and find a hairstyle that doesn’t put tension on your scalp. Many Black women suffer from traction alopecia from wearing tight braids, extensions, hair pieces, hair rubbers, and wigs. If worn frequently, these will pull the hair out and cause the hairline to recede. One style that is easy to do with medium length natural Black hair is to wet the hair, gently comb it, smooth it back and gather it into a scrunchie. Just be sure to take the scrunchie out at night. Another style for natural Black hair that is short in length is to wear a soft fabric headband around the head. Match the headband fabric to the color of your outfit for a nice look.

History has played a significant part in how people of color view their hair. In many ways society sends messages that our hair need to be “tamed, texturized or treated” in some way or another. Take a moment and think about it. Would God create characteristics in the hair of millions of people and then tell us to spend money fixing the mistakes? I don’t think so. What I know for sure is when curly, spiraled or kinky hair is cared for the way it was indented, the result is soft, manageable hair with visible health and shine.

Three years ago, I was inspired to create a hair care ritual to meet the need of Black Hair. As a natural hair specialist, and beauty expert I was frustrated by the lack of quality plant based products to care for our hair. Over 95% of hair care products in the mainstream marketplace were full of petrochemicals like petroleum jelly and mineral. Which do absolutely nothing to improve the health of our hair? Shampoos were full of harsh detergents that strip black hair of its natural oils. Countless hair pomades and oils, braid sprays and even relaxers claiming to “natural, organic or from the Motherland.” One glance at the label and the first five ingredients read like a broken record the same inferior ingredient in every brand. Colorful packaging, pretty models and buzz words, but all fall short.

I challenge you to read the labels on the products you use to “care” for you unique hair. Now compare them to the first five ingredients any of Indigofera’s plant based hair care products. Olive, jojoba and sweet almond oil, mango and Shea butter, sage, nettle, lavender, peppermint and lemongrass essential oil. Once you experience the difference you always demand the best.

If you are anything like me, you are likely trying to soak up every bit of summer because before you know it, winter will be here again. I love biking, taking long walks, swimming, or spending all day at amusement parks during the summer months. All of these activities are great for my mind, body and soul, but wreck havoc on delicate tresses if they are not properly cared for.

It’s just as important to take extra precaution in the summer’s sun as it is in the harsh winter’s frigid weather. Many people don’t realize that the sun dries out the hair and may leave it brittle if it’s not properly and regularly moisturized; remember, just because there’s humidity in the air, doesn’t mean there’s automatically moisture in your hair. Here are some tips to keep your hair healthy and flourishing during these wonderful summer months.

1. Keep your hair protected by wearing buns, extensions, or twists to avoid total exposure to sun
2. If you are planning to stay in the sun for long periods of time, use a protective sunscreen on your hair before stepping out. Be sure to wash the hair afterwards.
3. Stay away from heating appliances such as flat-iron, hot combs, or curling irons. If you MUST use them, be sure to use a heat protectant.
4. Do not wash your hair with hot water; this will dry out the hair. Use cool water instead.
5. Avoid using products containing alcohol, mineral oil, paraffin gel and other ingredients that lead to dry brittle hair. Natural products do not contain these harsh ingredients.
6. Moisturize your hair daily. Use a light misting spray or natural moisturizer regularly.
7. Always use a moisturizing shampoo that does not contain lauryl/laureth sulfate
8. Deep condition your hair after each shampoo.
9. Drink plenty of water to help keep yourself and your hair hydrated.
10. If your hair is natural, moisturize your hair at night and sleep with a plastic cap under your scarf in order to allow the moisture to penetrate your hair.
11. Before plunging into a pool, be sure to coat the hair with either a moisturizer or conditioner if possible. Wear a swim cap, and wash the hair as soon as possible after exiting the pool.
